This happened last year at SAU. (NFHS Rule & OBR are the same)
Batter hits a slow roller down third base line. Pitcher and third baseman don't have a play on batter-runner at first, so they decide to let the ball roll, hoping it goes foul. Runner from 2nd is now standing on 3rd base. After seeing the ball is not going to go foul, the pitcher and 3rd baseman do not pick the ball up and it hits the runner "standing" on 3rd base.
What's the proper ruling? State which rule backs up your decision. |

| Dead ball R1is out. He was struck by a batted ball in fair territory. If I'm wrong it is because the ball has already passed the fielder. |

Why would he be out if the runner is standing on the base? |

| Base is in fair territory. It offers no protection. Thats why you take a lead from from third in foul territory. |

| The runner is declared SAFE but not because he is standing on the base. The runner is protected from being called out while standing on the base on an INFIELD FLY Rule situation ONLY. In this instance he is not out because third baseman had an opportunity to field the ball before it hit the runner! |
